At Swinburne, we want to inspire young people to higher education and excite them about learning.

We’ve created a wide range of opportunities for school students and teachers to engage with us. This includes workshops, events, outreach programs and work experience opportunities. Many of these are leading programs that promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics).

We also invest in initiatives to bolster community education, including equity programs and projects to enhance emotional intelligence in schools.

We offer several equity programs to secondary school students.

Tertiary Experience Program 

This program enables rural Year 9 and 10 students to stay at Swinburne and experience what it’s like to study at university. We also provide Swinburne Experience Grants to help rural and interstate students attend our Open Day.

Tertiary Aspiration Program

We run a Tertiary Aspiration program for financially disadvantaged Year 9 and 10 students from the Boroondara and Knox areas.

Over the last decade, Swinburne has been developing ways to measure and enhance emotional intelligence.  This includes Aristotle-EI — a suite of programs to help students improve emotional intelligence competencies in the classroom. 

The programs are tailored to a range of developmental stages with lessons for Grade 1, 4, 5, and Year 8 and 10 students and focus on building the four dimensions of emotional intelligence:

  • emotional recognition and expression
  • understanding the emotions of others
  • emotional reasoning
  • emotional management and control.
     

Our research has shown that developing emotional intelligence in schools improves students' academic, sporting and leadership capabilities and enhances personal resilience and wellbeing. 

Over the next few years we will collaborate with our partner schools to develop new programs for other year levels and specific groups such as children with autism and a program for boarding houses.

    Work experience opportunities

    At, Swinburne we welcome students in year 9 and 10 to participate in work experience at the university. These one-week placements give students the opportunity to develop employability skills, explore career options and build self-confidence.
