I worked as a Digital Marketing and Communication Intern at Inner Glow Superfoods Inc. in Toronto, Canada. This organisation produced frozen acai puree for businesses, and at the time I arrived, they were preparing to offer them to the general public via a new website, which was also in the works.

My role was predominantly to promote this new launch on social media by creating content. As a small business, my manager also attended trade shows and other business events, which I also joined, to further promote the launch.

As my first industry experience, everything I engaged in was a new experience and sometimes a challenge, so succeeding in these areas definitely became achievements. For instance, programs and platforms utilised for content creation and website development were not areas I had learned about or explored.

Having to learn and get comfortable with these in a short amount of time was quite challenging, but I am now grateful for these experiences as I utilise these techniques today.

I really enjoyed how the tasks and responsibilities given to me brought out my creative thinking; I’m naturally creatively inclined and this internship confirmed that a career in marketing is definitely for me. However, as my role was predominantly focused on digital marketing, it’s peaked my interest and I’m looking to explore other areas within the marketing industry.

Ruvinie completed her internship as a Digital Marketing and Communication Intern at Inner Glow Superfoods Inc.

As I completed this internship in Toronto, travelling across the world on my own and finding comfort and safety in a new city was an immense learning experience. To say I was fearful before flying out would be an understatement, but I truly surprised myself with how quickly I was able to build confidence and navigate on my own.

Something else I learnt about myself was my ability to quickly adapt to new changes. For example, as most of what I worked on were new activities and experiences, my ability to learn a new skill and grasp it made me identify myself as a fast learner – a strength I did not realise I had.

In terms of my career, I realised I had definitely made the right decision about pursuing a career in marketing. Classroom learning limits you to what the industry is really like and how everything operates, so once I eased myself into my internship, I was happy with the work I was doing and knew I was heading in the right direction.

Classroom learning is based on theory and the most you can do to apply these concepts to real scenarios is through case studies, which certainly helps, but there is still a gap. I feel it isn’t enough to prepare you for your career.

Completing this internship allowed me to physically place myself in these scenarios and experience how the industry operates firsthand. I was then able to apply what I learnt in the classroom and make more sense of it.

It is certainly one of my most fulfilling experiences. Not only do you enhance your knowledge by cementing classroom learning, but it’s also a great opportunity to start building connections in the industry and learn from industry professionals.

If you are someone who learns best in a hands-on environment or wants to gain industry experience in a short period of time, I definitely recommend undertaking an internship! And if you’re able to do one overseas, I also recommend that too – it’ll be an experience you’ll never forget!
