Swinburne has ranked in the top 400 universities globally, improving its position in the QS World University Rankings by rising another 34 places to 387th in 2018.
Each year the QS World University rankings consider more than 1000 universities around the world according to six key performance indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, faculty/student ratio, research citations per faculty, international faculty ratio, and international student ratio.
Since 2015, Swinburne has improved significantly in the QS ranking system, largely driven by the scale of improved research performance and citations.
The university's researchers have made discoveries that have changed the face of fields ranging from medicine to social services, astronomy and aeronautical safety, which attracted the attention of the international research and academic community, in particular in high quality publications.
Some of Swinburne’s recent achievements include:
- The development of novel stem-cell technology that will provide the ‘ink’ needed for the BioPen, a handheld 3D printer designed to allow surgeons to ‘draw’ new cells onto injuries with stem cell ink
- World-first graphene certification centre to be established at Swinburne
- The Australian Research Council’s $31.3 million Centre of Excellence for Gravitational Wave Discovery launched at Swinburne
- Professor Baohua Jia and Dr Han Lin lead a team developing a graphene oxide-based supercapacitor offering high performance and low-cost energy storage
Earlier this year, Swinburne’s School of Design was recognised as one of the best in the world by the QS World University Rankings by Subject. Ranked at equal number 40 for Art and Design, Swinburne improved by more than ten places since 2017.
In 2017, for the third consecutive year, Swinburne was ranked in the QS rankings for the world’s top universities under the age of 50.
The QS ranking is viewed as one of the three most-widely read university rankings in the world, along with Academic Ranking of World Universities and Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
