The Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Human Factors) provides the specialised knowledge and skills for aviation professionals undertaking operational roles within a Safety Management system. The course, primarily, is designed to meet the needs of personnel currently involved in the aviation industry who wish to upgrade their skills at tertiary level in the specialist area of human factors. In addition, the course has relevance for personnel in other technologically based industries including rail, shipping, medical, heavy industry, the chemical industry and energy production. Graduates may pathway into either the Graduate Diploma of Aviation (Human Factors) or Master of Aviation (Human Factors) courses with advanced standing.

Course description
The Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Human Factors) forms the first stage in a three-stage nested suite of programs consisting of:
Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Human Factors) (GC-AVHF)
Master of Aviation (Human Factors) (MA-AVHF)
The Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Human Factors) provides the specialised knowledge and skills for aviation professionals undertaking operational roles within a Safety Management system. One of the unique aspects of the graduate certificate is that lecturers from a number of universities contribute to this teaching. This provides a range of diverse views and ideas and broadens the students' understanding of the human factors domain.

Course structure
The Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Human Factors) consists of a total of four units (50 credit points).
Units normally carry 12.5 credit points. In each academic year, eight units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points and four units normally constitute a part-time load of 50 credit points. The typical part-time student's average weekly workload during semester is expected to be 25 hours.

On completion of the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Human Factors), graduates will be able to:
- demonstrate specialised knowledge in professional aviation human factors practice
- identify and describe the complexity of human performance issues in the aviation industry and provide solutions to human factors problems
- participate effectively within operational safety teams
- describe contemporary and emerging aviation human factors issues and challenges
- apply clear and coherent communication skills to articulate complex knowledge and ideas
- demonstrate responsibility and accountability for all personal work outputs.

Entry requirements
To be eligible for consideration for entry, candidates would normally be university graduates with a minimum Bachelor qualification (AQF level 7) in any of the following disciplines: Aviation; Engineering; Business; Economics; Management; Law; Marketing; Science; Technology; Psychology; Social Science or other disciplines assessed to be appropriate.
Applicants who do not meet the above entry requirements will be considered if they have significant, relevant aviation or allied industry experience* (minimum of three years).
* Relevant industry experience: If this includes work experience, documents substantiating work experience need to be provided on company letterhead and clearly detail roles as well as duties and duration of posts held.
