How to apply as a local student
We understand that the process of applying for university can be a little daunting at first — but it shouldn’t be! Here’s everything you need to know about starting an exciting new chapter in your life and how to apply to Swinburne University of Technology as a local student.

Before you apply to study at Swinburne, check that you meet all the entry requirements for your chosen course. Do this by searching for a course using the course search tool and scroll down to “entry requirements”.

Note: This page is for local students (Australian citizens, Australian permanent residents, NZ citizens). If you are on a temporary visa (Student visa, Bridging visa, Business visa etc), you are considered an international student. If you’re an international student, the process to apply to study at Swinburne is a little different. Learn more about how to apply as an international student.
Applications for the next available intake:
- Current Year 12 students: Check important dates and apply through the VTAC website.
- Non-Year 12 students: You can apply direct to Swinburne or through VTAC. If you’ve already applied through VTAC, you cannot apply direct and you must proceed with your VTAC application.
- As a direct applicant: If you’re a new applicant to Swinburne, know which course you want to study, understand the course requirements and are not planning to apply to any other institution, you can register and apply here.

Applying via VTAC
The Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) is the main body for applying to tertiary institutions in Victoria.
As an international student, you can also apply to Swinburne through VTAC if you are already studying Year 12 in Australia.
Eligible non-Year 12 students can apply for the next available intake through VTAC.

Study online at Swinburne

How to apply for vocational education (VE)
Vocational education includes TAFE, certificates and diplomas.
Applications, including supporting documentation, can be submitted online or by email, post or in-person.
Note: Check the program application closing dates, as some close early.
You may need to organise some of the following supporting documents before you apply:
- certified and translated copies of previous academic results
- proof of your name and citizenship
- certified copy of your academic award(s)
- statement of purpose explaining what you hope to achieve from your studies
- current résumé.
Supporting documentation must be certified as a true and correct copy of the original. We don’t accept photocopies of previously certified documents. Learn more about supporting documents required to apply to Swinburne.

Important information for vocational education (TAFE) students
If you would like to study TAFE at Swinburne, you’ll need to complete these requirements:
- A pre-training review (PTR) — you’ll need to complete a series of questions to make sure you’re placed in the best course for you.
- Language, literacy and numeracy (LLN) — your language, literacy and numeracy skills will be evaluated. You may need to complete an online assessment when you apply to Swinburne.
- Skills First — this is an interview to help identify if you’re eligible for a government-subsidised place
- Green ID — Swinburne uses a digital ID service.
You’ll need two of the following documents, with at least one photo ID:
- Australian Driver’s Licence
- Australian Passport
- Australian Visa (Foreign Passport)
- Australian Citizenship Certificate
- Medicare Card
- Australian Birth Certificate.
Note: Are you an Australian citizen but don’t have a passport? We will require two forms of identification from you.
Before you enrol in these programs, you need to find an employer willing to offer you an apprenticeship or traineeship.
Your employer will need to register you through an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) by calling 1800 639 629 or going to the Australian Apprenticeship Centre website.
How to apply for undergraduate courses
Undergraduate study includes all bachelor, honours and associate degrees.
Applications, including supporting documentation, can be submitted online or by email, post or in-person.
Note: Make sure to check the course application deadlines, as some close early.
You may need to organise some of the following supporting documents before you apply:
- certified and translated copies of previous academic results
- proof of your name and citizenship
- certified copy of your academic award(s)
- statement of purpose explaining what you hope to achieve from your studies
- current résumé.

- proof of your name and citizenship

- portfolio (architecture and urban design programs)
- academic and professional referee reports (psychology programs).
