The Photon Model in Quantum Optical Physics

Associate Professor Bryan Dalton

CAOUS, Swinburne University of Technology

3.30pm, Friday 19 April 2002, Seminar Room (AR103), Graduate Research Centre, Swinburne

The photon model is of central importance in describing processes occurring in all branches of quantum optical physics, including cavity quantum electrodynamics. This talk will relate the photon concept to the quantum treatment of the electromagnetic field based on field modes. Some misconceptions regarding the nature of the photon will be described. Characteristic effects in quantum optics and cavity quantum electrodynamics will be reviewed. Several versions of the photon model will be described, each related to different choices of the field modes, and characteristic applications of each approach will be presented.
