This talk will present a novel concept for inducing optically tunable periodic
structures in highly nonlinear photorefractive materials. It will discuss the theory and summarize experimental
results demonstrating the key aspects of light propagation in these optically-induced periodic structures, such
as excitation of Bloch waves and modifying their dispersion properties, beam shaping and interaction. This provides
a novel way for an active control of light by light itself in optically-induced nonlinear photonic structures. The
outcome of this fundamental research may open-up new directions for technological advances in the photonics with
applications to all-optical switching and information storage.
