A Self Adjusting Gain Equaliser for WDM Communications

Flattening the gain or signal strength across many wavelength division multiplexed communications channels is conventionally accomplished using either reatively
simple, fixed filters, or else active filters which employ multiplexers, demultiplexers and multichannel power monitors. The former, while relatively simple and
inexpensive, cannot change to respond to varying channel powers, while the latter are complex and expensive. I will describe the development of a self adjusting
equaliser that is much simpler (and potentially cheaper) than the active equalisers, but can adjust itself, without any external control or feedback loop, to
varying optical channel powers.
