How to become a Student Learning Assistant

As a Student Learning Assistant (SLA), you’ll be provided with an opportunity to develop your skills and techniques to help advance the learning needs of your fellow students. You’ll also have access to a range of resources in face-to-face and virtual formats, within (and outside of) the LAS Centre.

Student Learning Assistants provide an important service to other students at Swinburne. As an SLA you will gain the opportunity to develop your own skills that will help you stand out to future employers, including:

  • providing collaborative peer-to-peer learning support 
  • Interacting closely with students from a wide range of backgrounds
  • building and developing personal knowledge through initial and ongoing training
  • reflecting on learning in the role
  • learning the skills to improve your employability beyond your studies.

Key responsibilities

Key responsibilities of a Student Learning Assistant include:

  • engaging with students in critical dialogue on their work and assisting them in developing their learning and academic study skills
  • providing effective peer-to-peer support to students
  • promoting drop-in consultations and other activities offered by the LAS Centre
  • contributing to a positive team dynamic
  • giving and receiving focused feedback
  • collecting student attendance data.

As a Student Learning Assistant, you’ll also contribute to other activities, such as, but not limited to:

  • promoting LAS and SLA activities
  • program administration and collating attendance data.

SLA appointments are generally selected at the beginning or early in the semester. However, positions may become available during the semester so, please send in your application. Applicants are expected to attend interviews and successful candidates are required to attend the induction and training session.

Students need to meet certain criteria before applying to become a student learning assistant.

You should:

  • be enrolled as a Swinburne student
  • have a sound academic record
  • demonstrate the ability to facilitate discussions
  • create a friendly and supportive learning environment
  • have an interest in engaging with students from different cultural backgrounds
  • have strong communication and management skills
  • log your hours using our volunteering log sheet.

Student Learning Assistants will primarily be engaged in LAS drop-in sessions conducted in the Library from:

  • Monday to Thursday: 10.30am – 7.30pm
  • Friday: 10.30am – 4.30pm
  • Saturday and Sunday: 2.00pm – 6.00pm
