Biography

Kath Hulse is an Emeritus Professor in Housing Studies at the Centre for Urban Transitions. Her primary research interest is in the housing and urban drivers and consequences of economic, social, political and cultural change. Kath has a particualar interest in housing processes and social change in Australia and internationally. She has a strong track record as leader of research projects and has obtained many national competitive grants and is an experienced supervisor of postgraduate students. Kath was the academic leader of annual symposia for PhD students in the AHURI network of universities (2003-2013); Director of the Swinburne-Monash Research Centre of AHURI (2004-10); Co-leader Sustainable Cities in the Swinburne Institute for Social Research 2010-2016; and Director of the Centre for Urban Transitions 2017-2018. She was a Director of not for profit housing organisations (2001-2012). Prior to her academic career, she also had extensive, high level experience in policy development, research and program management in government.

PhD topics and outlines

Housing and affordability: Australia is confronting a range of severe housing problems including affordability, homelessness, shortages of supply, indigenous issues and fitting new housing into existing cities. We are looking to initiate research projects on the causes of these housing problems, their impacts, opportunities for new forms of urban housing and the need for reform in public and private housing.
