Course handbook
General Information
Overview
The Graduate Certificate of Engineering equips students with professional skills and knowledge required for the systematic development of complex engineering systems in a particular specialisation.
Study structure
Successful completion of the Graduate Certificate of Engineering requires students to complete units of study to the value of 50 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.
Full-time study: 50 credit points/eight standard units of study per year
Part-time study: 25 credit points/four standard units of study per year
One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)
See the course planner for an example degree structure.
Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year
One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)
See the course planner for an example degree structure.
Students must choose one specialisation consisting of:
- 3 specialisation units from the top half of the list
- 1 unit from the additional specialisation units list

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete the Graduate Certificate of Engineering will be able to:
- demonstrate specialised knowledge and skills in area of chosen specialisation that will enhance students’ career prospects and practice
- identify and describe issues and trends in area of specialisation that strengthen and broaden the students’ engineering capabilities to provide solutions to complex problems using critical thinking and independent judgment
- describe contemporary and emerging trends and challenges in area of chosen specialisation
- demonstrate clear and coherent communication skills to articulate complex knowledge and ideas to a variety of audiences
- demonstrate responsibility and accountability for all personal work outputs
Career opportunities
The skills attained from the program should assist graduates gaining employment as a professional engineer.
Course rules
To qualify for the Graduate Certificate of Engineering, students must complete:
- four [4] prescribed specialisation-specific units of study (50 credit points)
Volume of Learning
The Graduate Certificate of Engineering consists of 50 credit points. Units normally carry 12.5 points each. A standard annual full-time load comprises 100 credit points and a part time load comprises 50 credit points. The volume of learning of the Graduate Certificate of Engineering is typically 6 months full time (or part-time equivalent).
Maximum academic credit
The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Graduate Certificate of Engineering is 25 credit points (normally two units).
