General Information
Overview
The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health Practice teaches students the skills to interpret, critically evaluate, prevent, and solve a range of environmental health problems. From managing food and safety risks to environmental health law, students will receive broad training across the field. Graduates will be able to seek professional careers in the environmental health field, either as a practitioner or officer.
Study structure
Successful completion of the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health Practice requires students to complete units of study to the value of 100 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.
Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year. Note that students commencing in the Semester 2 intake will commence in the part time study mode.
Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year
One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

Learning outcomes
- Apply advanced theoretical knowledge and technical skills in a range of environmental health practice contexts
- Interpret the political, legislative and policy frameworks applicable to environmental health and identify and evaluate the appropriate mechanisms for addressing problems
- Apply a systems-based approach to address complex environmental health problems, contextualising the roles of environmental health practitioners and related disciplines
- Work ethically and responsibly, as an individual or within a team, and apply non-technical skills including critical self-reflection and interpersonal communication appropriate to the context
- Identify and critically evaluate sources of environmental health practice knowledge to contribute to and advance evidence-based practice
Career opportunities
The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health Practice prepares students for professional careers in the environmental health field, either as environmental health practitioners or officers (particularly for those wishing to pursue a career with local or state authorities) or in a range of other professional capacities, such as food and waste management consultants, communicable disease control, health promotion, health and environmental policy and sustainability positions.
Professional recognition
The Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health Practice is professionally accredited by Environmental Health Australia. Graduates are eligible to apply for membership to Environmental Health Australia (EHA) and Environmental Health Professionals Australia (EHPA).
Maximum Academic Credit
The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Graduate Diploma of Environmental Health Practice is 50 credit points (normally four units of study).
