Overview
The Master of Business Information Systems bridges the gap between coders and business decision-makers. Become proficient at both skillsets and emerge ready to occupy an untapped space. You’ll develop technical skills, analytical communication, data visualisation, and strategic skills that you can apply to a number of practical opportunities.
Study structure
Successful completion of the Master of Business Information Systems requires students to complete units of study to the value of 200 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.
- Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year
- Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year
- One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

Learning outcomes
Upon successfully completing the Master of Business Information Systems, graduates will be able to:
- demonstrate coherent and advanced knowledge of the inter-disciplinary nature of information systems in organisations
- critically evaluate the underpinnings of information systems, including business analysis, requirements analysis, database design and analysis, the management of information systems, IT project management and professional issues
- critically evaluate a range of theories and practices pertaining to the use of information systems in organisations, and apply them in the context of business analysis, project management and information management
- critically analyse organisational problems from both a broader information systems perspective and the specific perspective of business analysis, project management or information management
- communicate effectively with key stakeholders, develop effective working relationships, as a member or leader of a team
- demonstrate creativity and flexibility in the application of knowledge and skills to new situations, to solve complex problems, to respond to ethical organisational and IS/IT issues and dilemmas, and to think rigorously and independently
- demonstrate a critical understanding and appreciation of the fundamental research principles, research methods, and/or research design within a chosen and/or specified context in the area of Information Systems.
Career opportunities
Graduates will be ready for significant roles in areas such as business analysis, IT administration, change management, project management, information assurance and information systems. Graduates have an internationally recognised business analysis certification to enhance their career opportunities.
Course rules
To qualify for the award of Master of Business Information Systems students must complete 16 units of study (200 credit points) as follows:
- four (4) foundation units (50 credit points)
- eight (8) core units (100 credit points)
- four (4) units from one specialisation (50 credit points)
Professional recognition
The Master of Business Information Systems is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS) at the professional level and by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. The alumni of AACSB accredited business schools are among the world’s most influential leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs impacting business, government, and non-profit sectors. Only the top six per cent of business schools worldwide are AACSB accredited.
Maximum Academic Credit
The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Master of Business Information Systems is 100 credit points (normally 8 units). The exception to this rule is for students entering with a Graduate Diploma of Business Information Systems who may be granted up to 125 credit points of advanced standing (normally ten units).
