Overview

The Bachelor of Aviation and Bachelor of Business program equips graduates with the professional skills and knowledge required for diverse roles in the aviation and business sectors. This comprehensive course prepares students for professional airline and aviation operational roles, while also providing a competitive edge in business management.

Graduates who complete the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting) are additionally qualified to begin aircraft type endorsements in charter or regular public transport airline sectors, or to work as professional flight instructors.The program emphasizes the development of technical and professional skills, fostering a mindset capable of tackling complex real-world problems. It enhances work readiness for employment in both public and private sectors across various industries.

Study structure

Successful completion of the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business requires students to complete units of study to the value of 400 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.

  • Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year

  • Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year

  • One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

On successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Bachelor of Aviation

  • Demonstrate coherent understanding and application of the body of knowledge contained within the aviation industry including appropriate international and domestic regulations and organisations in a professional piloting context
  • Employ an entrepreneurial approach in contributing to innovation, development and management of risk, data, technology and change within professional aviation practice
  • Demonstrate broad and coherent knowledge of Aviation human factors, safety, management and technology to critically analyse and solve aviation business problems, implementing effective solutions in a global aviation context

Bachelor of Business

Career opportunities

Professional Pilot, Flying Instructor if completed in conjunction with the Graduate Certificate of Aviation (Piloting). Graduates may also be able to pursue roles such as Aviation Business Analyst, Aviation Project Manager or Aviation Entrepreneur in areas of aviation consultancy and/or charter service.

Course rules

To qualify for the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business, students must complete 400 credit points:

  • sixteen [16] core units (200 credit points)
  • eight [8] units from Aviation major (100 credit points)
  • eight [8] units from one Business major (100 credit points)


Students may not complete more than 200 credit points (16 units) at Level 1 (e.g. AVA1xxxx). A unit of study can only be counted once. Where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternative unit.

Students looking to achieve CASA professional pilot qualifications must be co-enrolled in the Graduate Certificate of Piloting in order to undertake the requisite flying practicum units (delivered by business partner CAE Melbourne Flight Training).

To be eligible for CA/CPA, students must also complete a 33rd unit LAW20019 Law of Commerce in addition to the Accounting major.

Volume of learning 

The Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business consists of 400 credit points. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points. In each academic year, eight (8) units normally constitute a full-time load of 100 credit points and four (4) units normally constitute a part-time load of 50 credit points.

The volume of learning of the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business is typically 4 years. For students who complete a Professional Placement, the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business consists of 450–500 credit points. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points with placement units carrying 25 credit points each. A standard annual full-time load comprises 100 credit points, and a standard part-time load comprises 50 credit points.

The volume of learning of the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business with a 6-month placement is typically 4.5 years. The volume of learning of the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business with a 12-month placement is typically 5 years.

Professional placements

Domestic students have an opportunity to undertake a WIL Professional Placement. Please note that due to government regulation, international students holding a student visa are not able to undertake Professional Placements in this course. Professional Placements are subject to a competitive selection process.


Students who undertake a 12-month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 500 credit points comprising of:

  • sixteen [16] core units (200 credit points)
  • eight [8] units from Aviation major (100 credit points)
  • eight [8] units from one Business major (100 credit points)
  • four [4] units of study of the Professional Placement co-major (100 credit points)


Students who undertake a 6-month professional placement are subject to the following course rules and must complete 450 credit points comprising of:

  • sixteen [16] core units (200 credit points)
  • eight [8] units from Aviation major (100 credits points)
  • eight [8] units from one Business Major (100 credit points)
  • two [2] units of study of the Professional Placement minor (50 credit points)

Maximum academic credit

The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Bachelor of Aviation / Bachelor of Business is 200 credit points (normally 16 units) – 100 credit points maximum from each discipline.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Business (with an Accounting major ; and Accounting and Finance major) is professionally accredited through CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). Graduates are therefore eligible to apply for membership of these professional bodies and Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).Graduates  are eligible to receive a number of exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and from The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).The Bachelor of Busines is also  accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. The alumni of AACSB accredited business schools are among the world’s most influential leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs impacting business, government, and non-profit sectors. Only the top six per cent of business schools worldwide are AACSB accredited.

The Bachelor of Business (with a Financer Major) is recognised under the CFA Institute Affiliated University and covers at least 70% of topics contained within the Level I CFA program Candidate Body of Knowledge (CBOK) topics including CFA Institute Codes of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

The Bachelor of Business (with a Financial Planning Major)  is a FAS-approved course, making it a recognised pathway towards becoming a registered financial planner. Graduates will satisfy the education standards prescribed by FAS to be able to provide financial advice in Australia, subject to meeting other registration requirements prescribed by FAS (including completion of a Professional Year for Provisional Relevant Providers and passing a National Adviser Exam).

The Human Resource Management major (in the Bachelor of Business)is accredited by the Australian HR Institute (AHRI).Accreditation is reviewed every three years by the AHRI National Accreditation Committee. Students applying for this course can be assured that the quality of core units map onto the Australian HR Capability Framework for HR Practitioners and Academics, a recognised benchmark of HR best practice and standards.

A. Applicants with recent secondary education (within past three years)

ATAR

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

Educational history 

An applicant's entire academic history, including ATAR results, will be considered for entry into this course. 

Selection rank adjustments 

Selection ranks for this course will be calculated based on your ATAR with adjustments to overall study scores based on subjects studied, location of your home address, SEAS application, and participation in Swinburne's Early Leaders program. Subject Adjustments 

A study score of 25 in any Business, any Information Technology, any Mathematics, Physics, Global Politics or Psychology equals 2 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 15 points.

Meeting course prerequisites 

VCE units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English as Alternate Language (EAL) or equivalent.

VCE units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics or equivalent.

Bridging courses

Applicants who do not meet the mathematics prerequisites for this course will be required to successfully complete Swinburne's MathsLink: General bridging program.

An applicant's entire academic history from the past seven years, including complete and/or incomplete post-secondary VET studies, will be considered for entry into this course. Only graded results will be considered.
