Innovate business to create a positive impact on the world. Develop core management and operational business skills as well as an entrepreneural mind-set to develop your own business or contribute to government, for-profit or for-purpose businesses. Apply your innovation skill-set and grow your network before you graduate with a 12 month paid industry placement.
Study structure
Successful completion of the Bachelor of Business (Professional) requires students to complete units of study to the value of 375 credit points. All units of study are valued at 12.5 credit points unless otherwise stated.
- Full-time study: 100 credit points/eight standard units of study per year
- Part-time study: 50 credit points/four standard units of study per year
- One credit point is equivalent to one hour of study per week per semester (including contact hours and private study)

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

Career opportunities
Career opportunities are extremely broad and range from business administration through to organisational management. Graduate roles, depending on the major(s) selected, include accountant, financial controller, business and data analyst, business consultant, project manager, sustainability manager, business development manager, entrepreneur, human resource consultant, organisational change coordinator, digital content strategist, investment analyst, financial planner, market research analyst, brand manager, corporate sponsorship executive, sports administrator, supply and distribution manager, and warehouse operations manager.
Professional recognition
The Bachelor of Business (Professional) (with an Accounting major, or an Accounting and Finance major) is professionally accredited through CPA Australia, Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ). Graduates are therefore eligible to apply for membership of these professional bodies and Institute of Public Accountants (IPA).Graduates are eligible to receive a number of exemptions from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and from The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
The Bachelor of Busines is also accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. The alumni of AACSB accredited business schools are among the world’s most influential leaders, innovators, and entrepreneurs impacting business, government, and non-profit sectors. Only the top six per cent of business schools worldwide are AACSB accredited.
Course rules
To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Business (Professional) students must complete 375 – 400 credit points comprising of:
- Five (5) Business Fundamentals core units (62.5 credit points)
- Three (3) Business Practice units (37.5 credit points)
- One of the following majors* (100-112.5 credit points):
- Eight (8) units of study in one of the following majors: Business Administration, Business Analytics and Analysis, Entrepreneurship, Finance, Human Resource Management, Financial Planning, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Management, Marketing or Sports Management (100 credit points) OR
- Nine (9) units from the Accounting major (112.5 credit points)
- Up to Six (6) units of other study comprising an advanced minor, minor and/or electives (62.5-75 credit points)
- Four (4) units comprising the Professional Placement Co-Major (100 credit points) (between 1672 and 1976** hours of professional placement)
Students may not complete more than 150 credit points (normally 12 units) at Introductory Level. A unit of study can only be counted once, where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternate.
*The Financial Planning major is only offered via SOL. International students will need to consider if this affects visa requirements when choosing which major to study.
** The total hours may vary depending on the number of weeks of placement completed.
Professional Placements
Students also have an opportunity to undertake a WIL professional placement and have the choice of completing an additional 50 cps (6 months) of professional placement OR 100 cps (12 months) of professional placement PLUS six units of study comprising an advanced minor, minor and/or electives (75 credit points)
Academic Progress – special requirements
In addition to the standard academic progress rules, this course has the following additional academic progress rules which are established in accordance with Academic Courses Regulation 62 (2):
1. A student is classified as 'at risk' of unsatisfactory progress if they:
(a) fail any unit of study
(b) behave in a manner that breaches the Swinburne Student Charter whilst on a professional placement
(c) are unsuccessful in securing a Professional Placement two months before Week 1 of their final year of study
2. A student is classified as 'unsatisfactory progress' if they:
(a) fail any unit of study in the next Progress Review period after being classified as being 'at risk'
(b) fail a Professional Placement or Work Experience in Industry unit
(c) have their professional placement terminated early by an industry partner. In the case of early termination of an industry placement by an industry partner, the student will be deemed as having 'unsatisfactory progress' and a progress review hearing may be convened within 2 weeks of the cessation of the placement.
(d) are unsuccessful in securing a Professional Placement two months before Week 1 of their final semester of study
Students who are identified as having unsatisfactory progress will be subject to the show cause provisions in the Progress Review section of the Academic Progress Policy.
Volume of Learning
The Bachelor of Business (Professional) consists of a total of 375 credit points depending on selection of major. Units normally carry 12.5 credit points (cps). A standard annual full-time load comprises 100 credit points and a part-time load comprises 50 credit points.
The volume of learning of the Bachelor of Business (Professional) is 4 years.
This course requires students to complete between 1672 and 1976* hours of professional placement. * The total hours may vary depending on the number of weeks of placement completed.
Maximum Academic Credit
The maximum level of credit that can be granted for the Bachelor of Business is 200 credit points (normally 16 units).

Entry requirements
A. Applicants with recent secondary education (within past three years)
ATAR
This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations. Guaranteed ATAR: if you receive an ATAR of 80 or higher and meet all the essential requirements for this course, you will be guaranteed an offer.
Educational history
An applicant's entire academic history, including ATAR results, will be considered for entry into this course.
Selection rank adjustments
Selection ranks for this course will be calculated based on your ATAR with adjustments to overall study scores based on subjects studied, location of your home address, SEAS application, and participation In Swinburne's Early Leaders program. Subject adjustments
A study score of 25 in any Business, any Information Technology, any Mathematics or Global Politics equals 2 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 15 points.
Meeting course prerequisites
VCE units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in any English (except EAL) or at least 30 in English as Alternate Language (EAL) or equivalent.

This course only accepts applicants who have just completed Year 12 or have not commenced any studies after completing Year 12 (ATAR results from the last seven years can be considered).
