Outcomes and course rules

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:

  • apply coherent and advanced knowledge of the chosen major in engineering in diverse contexts and applications using critical thinking and judgment
  • apply knowledge of research principles and methods to plan and execute a piece of research with some independence, as preparation for research higher degrees
  • apply problem solving, design and decision-making methodologies to identify and provide innovative solutions to complex problems with intellectual independence
  • apply abstraction, mathematics and engineering fundamentals to the analysis, design and operation of a model, using appropriate engineering methods and tools
  • communicate proficiently in professional practice to a variety of audiences, function as an effective member or leader of a diverse team, and use the basic tools and practices of project management within project work
  • demonstrate professionalism, integrity, ethical conduct, professional accountability and an awareness of professional engineering practice in a global and sustainable context
  • reflect on and take responsibility for their own learning and self-management processes, and manage their own time and processes effectively by regularly reviewing of personal performance as a means of managing continuing professional development and lifelong learning
  • appraise workplace expectations and opportunities related to their discipline, and integrate their studies with professional practice to enhance their career readiness.

Career opportunities

Graduates may find employment in a number of different engineering areas depending on their chosen major and specialisation. These areas include Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Telecommunication Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering, and Product Design Engineering.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Professional) is designed to produce graduates who have the technological skills and knowledge expected of professional engineers. Graduates are eligible to apply for graduate membership of Engineers Australia.

Course rules

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) (Professional) students must complete 475 credit points comprising:

  • 10 - 11 Engineering core units of study (125 - 137.5 credit points)**
  • 17 units of study from an Engineering discipline major in one of the following: Architectural, Biomedical, Civil, Electrical and Electronic, Mechanical, Product Design, Robotics and Mechatronics, Software  (212.5 credit points)
  • 4 units of study from the Professional Placement Co-Major (100 credit points); and
  • 2 - 3 elective units of study (25 - 37.5 credit points)**

** Students who meet the course prerequisites for VCE Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics are not required to complete MTH00007 Preliminary Maths and will instead receive an additional 12.5 credit points to use towards their other studies as an elective.

Students complete no more than 150cp (normally 12 units) at Introductory Level (i.e. Stage 1).

A unit of study can only be counted once. Where units are shared between majors and/or minors, students must choose an approved alternative unit.

Mandatory Placement:

This course requires students to complete between 1672 and 1976 hours of mandatory placement.

The total hours may vary depending on the number of weeks of placement completed.

Academic progress – special requirements

In addition to the standard academic progress rules, this course has the following additional academic progress rules which are established in accordance with Academic Courses Regulation 62(2):

1. A student is classified as 'at risk' of unsatisfactory progress if they:

(a) fail any unit of study

(b) behave in a manner which breaches the Swinburne Student Charter whilst on a professional placement

(c) are unsuccessful in securing a Professional Placement two months before Week 1 of their final year of study.

2. A student is classified as 'unsatisfactory progress' if they:

(a) fail any unit of study in the next Progress Review period after being classified as being 'at risk'

(b) fail a Professional Placement or Work Experience in Industry unit

(c) have their professional placement terminated early by an industry partner. In the case of early termination of an industry placement by an industry partner, the student will be deemed as having 'unsatisfactory progress' and a progress review hearing may be convened within 2 weeks of the cessation of the placement.

(d) are unsuccessful in securing a Professional Placement two months before Week 1 of their final semester of study

Students in this situation may be invited to transfer to an alternative undergraduate course. Students who are identified as having unsatisfactory progress will be subject to the show cause provisions in the Progress Review section of the Academic Progress Policy.

Honours merit calculation

  1. Honours merit calculation Honours merit calculation will be based on the averaged results of 12 units in the final two years of the course with the following descriptive outcomes:

  • BEng (Hons) with High Distinction; for students who achieve ≥ 80
  • BEng (Hons) with Distinction; for students who achieve 70 – 79
  • BEng (Hons) with Credit; for students who achieve 60 – 69
  • BEng (Hons); for students who achieve < 60

Students who transfer with advanced standing are required to undertake at least 9 of these units at Swinburne, including all 6 outcome units, to qualify for an honours merit calculation. This honours merit calculation will be based only on units completed at Swinburne.

If a student has not completed at least 9 of the specified units, they will graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) as an award title, but not be eligible for a merit-based honours description. The following units will be used in the Honours merit calculation: (* denotes outcome unit).

Entry requirements

A. Applicants with recent secondary education (within past three years)

ATAR

This course uses the ATAR as part of its selection considerations.

Guaranteed ATAR: if you receive an ATAR of 85 or higher and meet all the essential requirements for this course, you will be guaranteed an offer.

Educational history

An applicant's entire academic history, including ATAR results, will be considered for entry into this course.

Selection rank adjustments
