Social Data in Action - We are AI: Towards Robust Public Participation in ADM Oversight

The Social Data in Action Series is presented by the Social Innovation Research Institute at Swinburne and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision Making and Society. The series explores the interface between social science and data science, and connects researchers and industry professionals with leading global voices in the field.
Webinar 4: We are AI: Towards Robust Public Participation in ADM Oversight
In this talk, Julia Stoyanovich will discuss recent public education and public engagement work of the Center for Responsible AI (R/AI) at New York University. She will speak about a public education course and a broadly-accessible comic book series called "We are AI", and will also discuss a series of public engagement activities around a proposed law to regulate the use of automated hiring tools in New York City. Julia will draw on these efforts to chart a path towards strengthening the distributed accountability structures, to make the design, development, use, and oversight of automated decision systems responsible.
Speaker
Julia Stoyanovich is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science & Engineering, and of Data Science at New York University (NYU). She directs the Center for Responsible AI at NYU, a hub for interdisciplinary research, public education, and advocacy that aims to make responsible AI synonymous with AI. Julia's research focuses on responsible data management and analysis: on operationalizing fairness, diversity, transparency, and data protection in all stages of the data science lifecycle. She established the "Data, Responsibly" consortium and served on the New York City Automated Decision Systems Task Force, by appointment from Mayor de Blasio.
