Presented by the Smart Cities Research Institute

A new study by Swinburne shows Australia's transport sector needs to catch up with international trends when it comes to transport digitalisation. The study, funded by the iMOVE CRC and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development and Communications, developed a benchmarking of best practice transport and freight digitalisation across OECD countries. The Swinburne benchmarking index is based on 10 international digitisation indicators in addition to 40 new indicators developed in this study. These indicators were used to develop a new index based on three pillars that included productivity, industry and consumer acceptance, and policy and regulations. The benchmarking results showed Australia’s index to range between a score of 59 for the maritime sector up to a score of 81 for the road sector. Australia’s overall index across all transport sectors was 72 which ranked Australia at number 13 amongst the 38 OECD countries included in the study.

This seminar will present the benchmarking methodology, study findings and lessons learned from leading nations in transport digitalisation. The presentation will also outline a number of recommendations to improve transport digitalisation practices in Australia including development of a national vision for smart mobility, investment in backbone digitalisation infrastructure, capacity building, supporting translational research and accelerating deployment of promising new technologies.
