Swinburne rises in ARWU global subject rankings

- Physics, Automation and Control, Law and Telecommunications led the increases in Swinburne’s rankings in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
- Swinburne has entered the top 10 Australian universities in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering.
- A total of 17 Swinburne subjects are included in this year’s rankings.
Swinburne has increased its rankings across 14 subject areas in the latest Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) Global Ranking of Academic Subjects.
Physics saw the greatest improvement, with Swinburne rising 90 places to 212. Automation and Control cemented its place in the top 100, rising 29 places and putting Swinburne 8th in Australia in this area.
Swinburne also improved its global ranking and entered the top 10 Australian universities in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Mechanical Engineering. Law also experienced improvement, with a calculated subject ranking of 115, positioning Swinburne among the top five Australian universities.
Swinburne debuted in the top 150 universities in Telecommunications, in the top 500 universities in Chemistry and remains ranked in the top 100 global universities for Civil Engineering. In total, Swinburne achieved global rankings in 17 subjects, up from 14 in 2020.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise) Professor Bronwyn Fox said: “these outstanding subject area achievements speak to the quality and impact of our research and our excellent capabilities in research areas that are strongly aligned with our Horizon 2025 strategy.”

The Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2021 ranks 4,000 universities in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences and Social Sciences.
The rankings look at a collection of indicators, including measures of research output, research influence, international collaboration, research quality and international academic awards.
