From arts to fresh starts

When he first finished high school, Michael went on to study a Bachelor of Arts. He hated it and realised that he did not want to work in an office for the rest of his life.

Considering a career in trades, his father – a qualified plumber with his own business – urged him to pursue a licensed trade that would provide him with greater opportunities.

Michael decided on electrical, completed his four-year apprenticeship and eventually ran his own business. While successful, he was not enjoying his work as it was often repetitive.

The turning point for Michael came through the COVID period as the business suffered a loss from lockdowns. On top of that, his young son was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis – a serious lung disease requiring lifelong treatment.

The time is now

Michael became involved in his father's plumbing business – providing the accompanying electrical work needed on jobs. Eventually, he decided to take the plunge and start a new apprenticeship through Certificate III in Plumbing with Swinburne at the age of 33.

He enlisted through group training organisation Master Plumbers, which allowed him to work with various employers in the industry. This structure gave him a larger scope of experience and skills while completing his study through Swinburne.

"Swinburne is made by the people with supportive teachers who really believe in their students and push them to do more," says Michael. "The plumbing exam was more intense than anything I had expected, but the teachers prepared us really well for that. They really want to see you succeed."

Award nominee with dual qualification

Paul Fenton, one of Michael's teachers, described him as 'meticulous, thorough and determined'. "Michael has placed himself in a unique position with dual qualification in electrical and plumbing," says Paul.

Michael was recently nominated by Paul for the Master Plumbers Frank Maskell Award for his excellent work. If successful, he will be in the running for the Andrew Letten Gold Medal Award.

Now that he is fully qualified, Michael works as both a plumber and an electrician with Reliable Plumbing. The business, which was Michael's final host employer during his apprenticeship, offered him the position before graduation.

Michael also has an advice to others considering mature-age study. "You're never too old to start again. There were plenty of others in my class at my age or older. Commit to the four years and ride the waters. There will be hard days, but at the end of it, you'll be set for life," says Michael.
