Overview
This unit prepares pre-service teachers to plan, teach and assess Mathematics in the primary classroom. In this unit pre-service teachers will gain knowledge of the principles, practices and curriculum context of teaching and learning Mathematics. An emphasis will be placed on the use of ICT to support mathematical teaching and learning.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Critically evaluate public debate, education policy and school priorities relating to mathematics both in Australia and globally
- Review the mathematics found in children’s homes and communities, including the impact of caregiver attitudes and different cultural systems on mathematics learning
- Integrate theory and research evidence with Mathematics curriculum content, Pedagogical content knowledge, and professional standards to plan for, enact and evaluate mathematics teaching and learning
- Analyse and evaluate the benefits and limitations of various forms of assessment strategies in Mathematics education
- Select, design and apply relevant ICT tools to support mathematical understanding and learning, including the travel of learning between home and school

- Learning mathematics – neuroscience and the mathematical brain; mathematical mindsets; the affective domain.
- Contemporary pedagogical approaches and methods of teaching Mathematics, including the use of ICT
