Overview

This unit allows students to design and innovate a technology-based solution to address industry-driven challenges related to their chosen specialisation. It has a substantial emphasis on technology innovation and research in the process of designing and developing solutions to solve complex real world problem. Teams of students will have a staff member as a ‘facilitator’ whilst working on this project. Student teams will be allowed to select a project from a range of industry-oriented innovation projects aligned to their chosen specialisation or course discipline.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Describe the practices used in real-world research including legal, commercial and ethical frameworks and apply an evidence-based approach to technology innovation on topics in the student's chosen specialisation
  • Research the literature and compare viewpoints and arguments, and identify gaps in knowledge-generating innovation concepts on topics in the students’ chosen specialisation
  • Apply critical knowledge of design fundamentals and Innovative practices to explore technology challenges for real-world problems related to students’ chosen specialisation
  • Apply a systematic approach to critically evaluate design solutions related to innovative technologies in the students’ chosen specialisation
  • Appraise innovative technologies related to students’ chosen specialisation to design, develop and present design solutions to end-users within a team environment
  • Develop reflective practices to interpret and critically evaluate design solutions by using self and peer-evaluation
  • Apply real-world research practices to interpret and critically evaluate previously published material in a formal literature review, and plan, design, develop an innovative solution within a team environment.
  • Draws on social, culture and ethical issues to make decisions and apply values expounded in professional practices in diverse contexts.
