Nanofabrication Technologies
Overview
The aim of this unit is to provide students with a basic understanding of the complete sequence in the nanofabrication processes from methods to fabricated structures, to characterize them and an overview of the major applications areas of nanotechnology.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Develop an understanding of the emerging technologies of nanotechnology and nanofabrication (A3, K1, K3, S1)
- Develop a degree of competency in the evaluation of various applications of nanofabricated materials (A2, K4, S1)
- Develop an understanding of the properties of nanomaterials (A4, K3, S1)
- Provide knowledge on advances of the characterisation of nanostructures (A7, K4, S1)
- Develop the capability of critically appraising the literature and writing reports in publication format in nanotechnology (i.e. a journal manuscript) (A7,K1,K3)

Hurdle
As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all Unit Learning Outcomes to a minimum standard, a student must achieve:
(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and
(ii) at least 40% in the final exam.
Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirement (ii) will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.

- Introduction to basic nanotechnology and nanofabrication processes
- Emerging nanofabrication processes (electron beam lithography, focussed ion beam, self-assembled nanostructures, nanocoating processes)
- Material characterisation issues in nanofabrication: emerging techniques, limitations
- Bottom-up and top-down nanocharacterisation techniques
- Applications of nanostructured materials: Nanomedicine, Nanobiotechnology, Energy and Environmental Issues
- Manufacture of novel nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, Nanowires, nanoparticles, nanoporous structures, nanofibres, graphene)
- Properties of nanostructured materials
