Innovation and Research Methods for Education
Overview
Pre-service teachers are introduced to a range of educational research and innovation approaches to teaching and learning as the foundation for engaging critically with research throughout their professional career. Pre-service teachers explore current and contemporary innovative research theories and practices. They develop strategies for critical evaluation of a diverse range of approaches for their continued professional learning and the implications for improved student learning. Pre-service teachers explore and understand the role of external professionals and community bodies in broadening teachers’ professional knowledge and practice, such as the incorporation of Problem Based approaches and other innovations in the education arena.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Critically examine the role of the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers in identifying appropriate practice, learning needs and sources for continued professional learning
- Identify, investigate and critically evaluate innovative approaches to curriculum, classroom practice and learning environments, including the safe and ethical use of ICT
- Critically examine a range of innovative practices, including ICT to support inclusive student participation
- Critically analyse the role of research in guiding and informing teaching practice
- Synthesise and integrate innovative theories and approaches within a specific discipline area to critically evaluate implications for improved student learning
