Overview

This unit of study aims to introduce the principles of electromechanical energy conversion. This includes the operation and analysis of transformers, induction motors and synchronous & DC machines. An introduction of the basic elements of power electronics is also provided.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Use the basic principles of electromechanical energy conversion to analyse the energy conversion process within electric machines (K1, S1)
  • Design, construct and assess the performance of simple electrical energy conversion systems (K1, S1)
  • Analyse electrical energy conversion systems both independently and collaboratively in a laboratory setting (K1, S1, S2)
  • Appreciate and apply safe practices in an environment that may contain potential electrical hazards (S1)
  • Collect and analyse experimental data, interpret results, formulate conclusions and generate laboratory reports (K1, S1, A2)
  • Use computer simulation to analyse electrical energy conversion systems (K1, K2, K3, S1)

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and(ii) obtain at least 40% in the final exam, and(iii) complete all lab work.Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirements (ii) and (iii) will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.
