Overview

This unit provides students with a critical understanding of the intersections between gender, sexuality and culture in an historical context. With a particular emphasis on the construction of gender relations and identity in Australia and Britain, the unit analyses the changing dynamics and cultural norms of sex and gender.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Engage in theoretical debates about the role of gender and culture in Australian history
  • Critically evaluate post-gender arguments and consider their merit in relation to historical trends in Australia
  • Construct a framework for understanding the role of culture in the creation of identities
  • Produce a historiographical critique of the intersections of gender and culture and the role these have played in the development of Australian society and identity
