High Acuity Nursing

Overview
Through the strengths-based framework, students will enhance their nursing management and care. From a concepts perspective, students will explore common high acuity patient presentations. Simulation will be used as an integral learning method to enable holistic management of high acuity patient presentations. The professional experience placement will provide an opportunity for students to consolidate their nursing practice.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Utilise evidence-based clinical knowledge and skills to undertake a systematic approach to assessment of a person highly dependent on medical care
- Explain the underlying pathophysiology of selected high acuity health problems to their clinical manifestations
- Establish, implement and evaluate a care plan and other documentation specific to the needs of a person highly dependent on medical care
- Communicate and work in collaboration with individuals/groups, significant others and the inter-professional health care team in the clinical setting

- Pathophysiology, patient assessment and management of high acuity presentations related to trauma, surgery and to cardiovascular, respiratory, integumentary and neurological conditions
