John Drummond
Alumni story | Science
From Swinburne Master of Science (Astronomy) graduate to science teacher – and beyond.
John Drummond loves exploring space. His collaboration with Ohio State University led to the discovery of an Earth-massed exoplanet orbiting a star in a binary star system. This discovery, published in Science, made astronomers rethink the formation of solar systems.
Having his master degree in astronomy has opened many career doors for John. Since graduating he has been president of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand, lectured on astronomy around New Zealand and become a high school science teacher – he loves teaching the topic that he’s most passionate about. John wants to keep researching comets and asteroids and hopes to complete a doctorate in astronomy.
