Overview

This unit supports students to gain real-world experiences in order to link university study with the professional world of work. The Professional Internship is an opportunity for students to undertake 'real world learning' to gain valuable professional experience in their course of study. This unit provides students with an opportunity to apply concepts and principles of their discipline in an industry workplace setting and to better appreciate the nature of employment in industry. Academic frameworks will focus on student’s employability skills via participation, observation and reflection to gain invaluable insight into their discipline area of study and future world of work.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Negotiate realistic work objectives
  • Reflect on university learnings and disciplinary knowledge and compare them to the experience of industry practice
  • Demonstrate effective communication skills for a range of audiences, including industry
  • Evidence new learnings and employability skills from the workplace experience

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

  • An overall mark for the unit of 50% or more

Content

  • This unit provides supported work-based learning in a real world context and the objectives of this unit are educational, not commercial
  • Students will be situated in an industry-based setting under the supervision of their Industry Supervisor, with support from their discipline Swinburne Academic Supervisor
  • Students will be supported to contribute knowledge, skills and practices from their university studies into a professional context relevant to their disciplinary course of study
  • Students will be required to effectively engage and communicate in a professional setting while working independently and, where required, in a team
  • Students will be required to demonstrate an understanding of the connection between academic knowledge, practical application and critically reflect on this professional experience in relation to future practice
