Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Demonstrate that they can safely operate the aircraft within defined limitations and COAAM standard operating procedures
  • Demonstrate that they can conduct themselves in a responsible and accountable manner as the pilot in command of a cross country flight that could carry passengers
  • Conduct aircraft pre-flight determining complete aircraft serviceability, fuel requirements and loading procedures
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills to plan and conduct a flight from departure aerodrome to a destination aerodrome, or alternative aerodrome, navigating the aircraft under the applicable flight rules. This includes pre-flight planning, compliance with airspace procedures and departure and arrival procedures, and navigation under normal and abnormal conditions
  • Demonstrate that they can manage aircraft systems, passengers and air traffic control requirements during normal and abnormal operations
  • Demonstrate English language proficiency to a minimum of ICAO level 4 standard
  • Demonstrate the practical application of non-technical skills in the area of threat and error management during flying operations
  • Apply the theory and practical knowledge gained to attain a Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplane)

Hurdle

As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:

1. Complete all syllabus lessons to at least the required level of competency2. Complete the total hour requirement of the Practicum; Solo (10 hrs), Simulator (1.0 hr), dual hours (35 hours) and PPL Test.3. Pass the PPL Flight Test to both CASA and COAA standards.

Content

The unit contains 35 dual hours, one hour simulator and 10 hours solo flight time consisting of general aircraft handling, and cross country flight exercises.

The unit concludes with a 3 hour Private Pilot Licence flight test.
During the semester a minimum of 1.0 hour pre-flight and post flight briefing is delivered for each of the exercises.
Additionally the student will require at least 2 hours per exercise for flight planning and pre-flight preparation
