Overview

In this unit, students will collaborate and engage with diverse and varied design projects, based upon industry-driven client briefs.
The aim is to provide opportunities for students to participate in real-world challenges, complex design problem-solving, and portfolio projects, while connecting with professional networks and gaining exposure to industry processes.
Under the guidance of supervisors, students will undertake client design projects, incorporating research methods to inform their design investigations. The unit emphasises enhancing design and management skills through meaningful contributions to industry projects, including client meetings, preparing scopes and fee estimates, meeting deadlines, presenting proposals and working within teams.

Rule

175 credit points and enrolled in a Bachelor of Design Degree (may include design honours and double degrees) from the School of Design and Architecture.

Requirements

Students are required to contact the Unit Convener with an expression of interest to enrol. The convenor may request a sample of design work and overall GPA prior to approving enrolment.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Critically analyse a design problem and establish relevant research and design methods for developing an innovative and effective design solution.
  • Develop design solutions and evaluate their capacity to achieve the project objectives, and promote high standards of design such as sustainability, cultural inclusivity and creative quality.
  • Develop design presentations incorporating evidence and justification for decisions, and present to the client, peers and supervisors.
  • Professionally contribute to group projects for given briefs, including participating in time and project management, client and team communications, scope and budget documentation and supply of final deliverables to clients as required.
  • Critically reflect on the processes and outcomes of design projects.
