Overview

In this unit, pre-service teachers will consider the principles and theory of effective assessment for student learning in the Primary classroom and examine contexts in which assessments take place. They will examine a range of assessment practices and strategies and how they relate to teaching and learning in a variety of contexts. Pre-service teachers will also explore feedback principles, recording and reporting in the primary classroom.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Identify and analyse the broader contexts in which assessment practices reside
  • Create a range of assessment plans using different strategies for different discipline areas that adhere to the general principles of assessment and reporting including providing timely and appropriate feedback to students about their learning
  • Compare a range of assessment and moderation strategies in terms of their purpose, benefits, limitations, implementation constraints and their application in interpreting student data, evaluating student learning and modifying teaching practices
  • Design a range of record keeping instruments
  • Critically evaluate principles and strategies for reporting student achievement
