Overview
The focus of this unit is on preparing pre-service teachers to plan, teach and assess within Arts (dance, drama, media, music and visual arts) and Design and Technologies within a primary context. In this unit pre-service teachers will gain knowledge of the principles, practices concepts and curriculum content. This unit explores ways to support and encourage children’s creativity and includes an appreciation and understanding of the contribution of the arts and design in the lives of children.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Apply high level critical and creative thinking to investigate the importance of creativity within the learning areas of ‘The Arts’ (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts) and ‘Design and Technologies’ within the Primary curriculum.
- Demonstrate and apply a sophisticated understanding of key concepts and curriculum content within the learning areas of ‘The Arts’ (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts) and ‘Design and Technologies’
- Critically analyse and evaluate contemporary pedagogical approaches in teaching, learning and assessment of ‘The Arts’ (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts) and ‘Design and Technologies’ including the use of ICT
- Create and design innovative learning programs for ‘The Arts’ (Dance, Drama, Media Arts, Music and Visual Arts) and ‘Design and Technologies’ that address the relevant National and/or State and Territory curriculum documents.
- Reflect critically on their values and beliefs about ‘The Arts’ and ‘Design and Technologies’ education, in contemporary Primary education settings including an appreciation of ethical and cultural considerations and impact on student learning and wellbeing.
