Overview
This unit aims to develop students awareness and understanding of what it means to become an environmental health professional. Students will engage in a range of experiences which aim to uncover the realities of the practice of environmental health. In doing so, students will appreciate becoming the professional self as a lifelong, iterative process involving ongoing critical reflection.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Analyse traditional and contemporary concepts of what it means to be a professional
- Critically evaluate the factors which influence the development of one’s own professional identity and becoming an environmental health professional
- Engage in critical reflection of a range of practice experiences to identify continuous improvements in understanding the practice of environmental health
- Construct a practice portfolio which demonstrates development as an environmental health professional

- Concepts of professional and professional practice
- Professional identify and the development of self
- Understanding the role of others in professional practice, networking, collaboration and communities of practice
- Differing contexts and settings for environmental health practice
- Enhancing knowledge, skills and understanding of practice through gaining practice experiences in collaboration with industry partners. This may include industry and site visits, participation in conferences, seminars or professional events or activities approved by the unit convenor.
