Overview

This unit focuses on contemporary theoretical and practice-based issues in entrepreneurship and innovation, which will be integrated with business and management theories, models and frameworks. On completion of the unit students will be able to identify, analyse, evaluate and offer value-creating solutions to local and global business and social problems from entrepreneurship and innovation perspectives.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Define and integrate theoretical principles applicable to entrepreneurship and innovation and apply these to problems and opportunities that might arise in the business and/or social context
  • Systematically review and critically evaluate research from a range of sources in order to make informed judgements on options for using entrepreneurship and innovation in business contexts
  • Build on and continuously develop the intellectual independence to be critical and reflective learners, who are cognisant of the relevance of entrepreneurship and innovation to their business discipline
  • Work collaboratively in groups

Content

  • The interface between entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Contemporary entrepreneurship issues, such as lean start-up, design thinking for entrepreneurship, firm growth, the entrepreneurship process, market and entrepreneurship leadership, entrepreneurship effectuation, commercialisation, international entrepreneurship, venture finance, venture marketing and communication, corporate venturing, entrepreneurship in developing economies, growth strategies, social entrepreneurship and commercialisation
  • Contemporary innovation issues, such as innovation management, the innovation management process, open innovation, technology/process/business innovation, new product development, innovation tools, innovation clusters and networks, innovation accounting and finance
  • The selected contemporary issues will be integrated in a learning and teaching nexus specific to business majors
