Overview

This unit is designed to offer a multidisciplinary inquiry into the technology, business, economics, and public-policy of computer networks and distributed applications. It will introduce students to the foundations of social media and a suite of related topics such as Social Customer Relationship Management (CRM), Mobile Applications, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), Big Data, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), Bluetooth, Smart Cards, Cloud Computing, Internet of Things (IoT) and emerging mobile technologies. This unit will also cover topical issues such as innovative business models, mobile interface, and concepts involving social network analytics.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Debate social media usage and its importance for daily organisational activities
  • Demonstrate knowledge of the issues involving big data, mobile applications and data communications involving organisations
  • Demonstrate basic familiarity with social network theory and its application for organisations and social media analysis
  • Debate theories involving implementation and adoption of new communication technologies to business (business mobility and telecommunications)
  • Communicate proficiently in professional practice to a variety of audiences and function as an effective member or leader of a team

  • Implementation issues associated with Mobile systems, intranets, portals, RFIDs and other smartcard technologies
  • Theories of adoption and implementation as applied to the technologies (Social media, Mobile systems and internet technologies)
  • Security issues associated with communication technologies – both now and in the future
  • Determining the business value associated with investments in mobile and internet technologies, communication infrastructure for organisations
