Overview
This unit will introduce students to the values that underpin strengths-based nursing where students will learn to use critical thinking, self-awareness, reflection, and mindfulness. These skills will assist students to develop resilience as a nurse and foster resilience in people in the students' care. The unit will also introduce students to health promotion and the role of the nurse in primary care and health promotion.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Identify the values of the strengths-based nursing framework
- Discuss and apply strategies that empower individuals to take an active role in health maintenance and self-care
- Apply written and verbal communication techniques in a context-sensitive way to facilitate a collaborative partnership between the nurse, the patient, and the healthcare team
- Describe and apply health promotion models to enhance the teaching and empowering of individuals to be active in health maintenance
- Describe a contemporary health care issue in consideration of the determinants of health, health promotion and healthy communities
- Identify and describe the role of the nurse in primary care and health promotion
