Overview

This unit builds on and integrates research knowledge from previous units to develop students’ understanding of translation of research to physiotherapy practice, including the use of implementation science theories and frameworks to guide the implementation strategies. Specifically, this unit will focus on evidence synthesis methods that inform clinical practice, including systematic reviews of the effects of interventions, qualitative evidence syntheses, and clinical guidelines. Students will conduct a systematic literature review, develop a research proposal based on their findings, and will present a research project at a conference for students, academic staff, and industry partners. Students will also consult with industry partners to create a plan for implementation of evidence-based practice in an industry setting.

Learning outcomes

Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:

  • Evaluate the quality and relevance of clinical guidelines and secondary research using critical appraisal tools and clinical reasoning skills
  • Create a systematic literature review of a current area of physiotherapy research to identify a research gap, and propose a detailed research project to address this gap
  • Create plans for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of evidence-based practice in clinical settings using implementation science methods, clinical guidelines, findings from research, and consultation with industry partners
  • Create effective and engaging oral and written research outputs from research findings and proposals
