Overview
The unit is designed to examine contemporary theories concerning the role and function of the family and its interaction with the wider society, discuss the theory and practice of systems approaches to family therapy, and explore the practices of couples therapy.

Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Appraise family systems and transgenerational theory
- Apply principles of family systems assessment and intervention
- Integrate family therapy approaches with other major counselling approaches
- Evaluate the impact of culture diversity on family therapy
- Integrate an understanding of the impact of childhood sexual abuse, trauma and mental illness into family therapy interventions
