Learning outcomes
Students who successfully complete this unit will be able to:
- Describe the threats to network security and their defences (K3)
- Formulate an organisational security policy (S1, S2, A2)
- Plan the implementation of a security policy using technologies such as firewalls, VPNs, Intrusion Detection Systems, and authentication systems (S1, S2, A2)
- Conduct encryption of simple messages using public key and secret key techniques (K3)
- Describe techniques used in dealing with Denial of Service Attacks (K3)
- Describe the operation of the major security protocols (K3)
- Describe the security issues relating to wireless technologies (K3)

Hurdle
As the minimum requirements of assessment to pass a unit and meet all ULOs to a minimum standard, an undergraduate student must have achieved:
(i) an aggregate mark of 50% or more, and(ii) at least 40% in the final exam.Students who do not successfully achieve hurdle requirement (ii) will receive a maximum of 45% as the total mark for the unit.
