About Sherry

A foreign country

Sherry was a migrant student who had to learn in a second language and a new culture.

From student to student coach

Sherry now coaches other migrant students using her firsthand experience and knowledge.

Commitment to community and care

Sherry's passion continues as she facilitates her students to network and succeed.

Facing the unfamiliar

Sherry believes that a strong community is the key to success while studying overseas. As a former migrant student herself, she recognises the difficulties of travelling for study. The far distance from family and friends can be isolating.

"I didn't understand the culture. Plus, the language was a difficult barrier for me," she says. Sherry chose to study part-time to ease the stress of learning in a second language – giving her time to review the course content and finish the homework.

Encouraged by her tutors, Sherry also engaged in volunteer activities including festivals and orientation on campus. Working with other students increased her confidence, created a sense of community and relieved the loneliness. "I became familiar with how to work and be social in Australia," she says.

Showing the ropes

Sherry's willingness to volunteer and assist new students led to a job offer as a Student Success Coach at Swinburne in 2018. She always recognises that each student has individual needs. "I go to every class and introduce myself," she says.

She helps students organise their student ID cards and passwords. They often ask her whom to contact if unwell, which course to study or where to find a job. Sherry can also refer students to specialists, such as a career adviser.

Nurturing the future

Sherry is proud of the community she has helped build with other migrant students at Swinburne. Through the Industry Exposure Program, Sherry and her colleagues have developed a group on Facebook – connecting students to potential job opportunities.

They have also created a digital resource with success stories from past students to educate and encourage current students. "Networking is super important – we stay connected and help each other," Sherry says.
