New beginning and sudden end

Cheyenne was on track for a career in disability services. With certificates in health and community services, she left school after Year 11 – straight into Melbourne's COVID-19 lockdowns.

Through what was already a difficult time, Cheyenne became the sole carer for her grandmother who had dementia. While she cherised the time with her nan, she realised disability care was not for her.

Cheynne reassessed her priorities and decided to pursue a long-held passion in space. Throughout her schooling, she had loved mathematics, but opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics were scarce.

From health science to space science

A support worker introduced Cheyenne to the Skills and Jobs Centre at Swinburne, where she went on to apply for the Certificate IV in Science. "I had always been interested in space, but never thought I would pursue it as a career. But then I thought – why can't I?", says Cheyenne.

As part of the course, she was able to engage in laboratory experience at the trade training centre KIOSC as an assistant lab technician. The role involved prepping labs, measuring chemicals and setting up programs for VCE students.

Aiming for the stars

With her certificate succesfully completed, Cheyenne has applied to progress to the Bachelor of Science at Swinburne in 2025. She is also hoping to live on campus to avoid long commute.

"The teachers at Swinburne were very supportive and definitely broadened my prospects. I have also made new connections through the Swinburne Youth Space Innovation Challenge," says Cheyenne.

During the three-day challenge, she participated in interactive demonstrations and projects – exploring hypotheses and explanatory evidence. She also took part in lively debates on topics such as space laws and ethics.

As a passionate learner, Cheyenne's goal of becoming an astrophysicist looks set to become a reality. "If you have the passion for science, go for it," she says.
