Biography

Flavia is a world expert on the architecture and cultural production of the Italian Fascist period. She is a member of the Centre for Transformative Media Technologies and came to Swinburne in 2013 after a varied teaching career at Deakin and Melbourne Universities and Temple University's Rome Campus.
She has also worked as Professional Development Manager at the Australian Institute of Architects and as Curriculum Development Consultant at Box Hill Institute.

She is president of the Society of Architectural Historians of Australia and New Zealand and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. She was the 2021-2 Balsdon Fellow of the British School in Rome and is a world expert on the architecture and urban planning of Rome, in particular of the Italian Fascist period. Her areas of research also include: how politics are made manifest in monuments and public space, the legacy of Fascism in contemporary society and the politics of Classical reception. She has published articles in Modern Italy, Rethinking Histories and the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians. Her monograph on Giuseppe Pagano-Pogatschnig came out with Intellect Press in 2020 and her next book charting the many aspects of the Fascist legacy in Rome is due out with Bloomsbury in 2024. She is chief investigator on the ARC Discovery Project DP240100615: Mapping Creativity in Captivity during WWII.


She teaches in the areas of design, history and theory with a particular focus on the inter-relationship between art and architecture, between design and health. She also conducts action research in the role of design to improve health outcomes. Design studios are used to explore new paradigms for aged care, in particular for people with dementia.
She facilitates the 'Hit Submit', 'Draft don't Drift' and 'Grant It!' writing workshops with Simone Taffe and is a leader of the Career Development team within SWAN (Swinburne Women's Academic Network).
